What started as a simple window display for Makeshift Society in San Francisco snowballed into the creation of an entire world, filled with outlandish characters and fantastic creatures. A society of daring, highly capable women called the Adventure & Sleuthing Society (A.S.S.) was born. The installation featured an enormous Mad Lib as well as a booklet of stories about the madcap hijinks of A.S.S., culminating in an opening night of festivities. The project was generously sponsored by MailChimp. It was the perfect opportunity to engage the public while indulging our love of absurdist storytelling.
One story became two and then two became ten, so we selected our favorite to display on the windows, Love Vortex Gone Awry. The Mad Lib format allowed us to interact with the public, using enormous yellow vinyl cut lettering to grab attention. Each day, the blanks were filled with new words supplied by members of Makeshift.
Always perfectionists, we printed out a life-size mock-up to double check scale, kerning, and leading. Petunia Pickles B. Pig’s keen attention to detail was instrumental in perfecting our layout.
